Rediscovering Football: A Journey from Childhood Passion to Coaching

Dear girls,

I want to share a story with you—a story about how football shaped my life and how it’s now shaping my daughter’s.

Growing up in a small village in the 1990s, my childhood was shaped by the boys around me. From the age of seven, I found myself immersed in a world dominated by football. With no other children nearby, I embraced the opportunity to play with the boys, thinking, "Why not?" What began as a simple pastime turned into a profound love for the game. I never imagined that kicking a ball around as a seven-year-old would lead me to where I am today. But here I am, reflecting on a journey filled with challenges, triumphs, and lessons that have not only impacted me but are now inspiring the next generation—my own child.

When I first started playing football, I was the only girl in a sea of boys. It was intimidating, but my love for the game was stronger than any fear or doubt. I didn’t let being the only girl stop me. Instead, I embraced the challenge and proved to myself—and others—that I belonged on that field just as much as anyone else. Football became my safe space, a place where I could be myself, push my limits, and grow stronger every day.

As I played, I learned so much more than just how to kick a ball or score a goal. Football taught me about teamwork, resilience, and the importance of believing in myself. It showed me how to handle setbacks, how to work hard, and how to celebrate victories—big and small. Every match was an opportunity to learn, and every challenge was a chance to grow.

Years later, my love for football led me to coaching. I wanted to give back to the sport that had given me so much. As a coach, I’ve had the privilege of working with young girls who remind me of myself when I first started. Watching them discover their own passion for the game, overcome obstacles, and grow into confident players has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

But nothing has been more special than sharing this journey with my daughter. Seeing her step onto the field for the first time brought back so many memories of my own childhood. Watching her grow, learn, and fall in love with the game has been an indescribable joy. As a parent, there’s something truly magical about witnessing your child find their passion and thrive in it. It’s not just about the sport—it’s about the life lessons she’s learning along the way. Football is teaching her resilience, teamwork, and the importance of believing in herself, just as it did for me.

Being able to coach her and support her has deepened our bond in ways I never imagined. It’s a privilege to guide her, cheer her on, and watch her face challenges with courage and determination. It’s also a reminder of why I fell in love with football in the first place—because it’s not just a game; it’s a journey of growth, empowerment, and connection.

To every young girl dreaming of playing sports, I encourage you to take that first step. Whether it’s joining a team, practicing in your backyard, or simply kicking a ball around with friends, let your passion lead the way. And to the parents out there, I urge you to support your daughters in their journey. There’s nothing more special than watching them discover their potential and thrive in something they love.

Football—and sports in general—are about more than just winning games. They’re about finding your voice, building friendships, and learning life skills that will stay with you forever. They’re about discovering who you are and what you’re capable of. And trust me, you are capable of amazing things.

So, lace up your boots, step onto the field, and show the world what you’re made of.

The game is waiting for you, and the possibilities are endless.

And as a parent, I can promise you that the journey will be just as rewarding for you as it is for your child.

With love and encouragement, Michelle Luke ( Coach and Parent!) x
